FAQs

What is a Tea dance? From the late 1800’s to well into the pre-WWI era in both America and England, late afternoon (low) tea service became the highlight of society life. As dance crazes swept both countries, tea dances became increasingly popular as places where single women and their gentlemen friends could meet — the swinging singles scene of the age. was illegal back in the day for bars to ‘knowingly sell alcohol to homosexuals’ and besides many of the venues there were not licensed as ‘night clubs’ or to sell alcohol. To avoid attracting attention, afternoon tea dances were promoted. Read more

Who is welcome? Twenty-three years ago, the climate was different and lesbians were in need of a safe space that was just for them. DJ Jodi offered that women-only space by renting out MaineStreet, but always struggled with keeping anyone out that was there to support and party with us. These days, DJ Jodi’s tea dances at MaineStreet are still 95% or more lesbian, but welcoming to ALL LGBTQIA+ friends and supporters! This is still a safe space and we are committed to making sure they are friends and supporters. MaineStreet now provides security and you can always speak to any of our door people should you need to!

Why is there a cover and why is it different every time? There is a cover, as these events are privately run by a promoter, DJ Jodi Entertainment. DJE pays to rent the space(s) at MaineStreet, provides staff, entertainers, promotions, theme props + giveaways. The cover is based on these expenses and each one is different. This year, we are adding a new “throwback tea” at $10, to offer an option at lower price point, without all the bells + whistles!

Can we get tickets at the door? Yes, we will always have or save tickets for door sales! St Paddy’s is the only one I strongly encourage advance purchase. We take cash only at the door. There is an ATM on site.

Will there be any strobes, fog or flash photography? Yes, we could use any of these at any time during the event. We can avoid strobes and fog, if you ask the DJ. When we have a photographer, we can’t control the need for a flash in a dark room. There are well-lit places for you to avoid photography, if that’s an option. In regard to photography, the images are purchased by DJE and used for promotions for future events. If you do not want your photo used, please kindly let the photographer know you’d rather not be photographed. You will never be tagged on social media without permission. Photos are posted in the event page shortly after the event.
